Mobile Technologies for social inclusion

The ASSISTANT application provides an on-line means of planning a trip, guidance on transfers when making multi-step journeys, an alert which tells the user when it is time to leave the vehicle, and assistance with getting from the vehicle to the final destination. Essentially, the product offers seamless support for the entire length of a journey and across different modes of public transport. The target user group for ASSISTANT is essentially mobile older people, but the system will be designed so that it is accessible for all potential users. The ASSISTANT system can be accessed using a home computer and Android smartphones, and provides only situation-relevant information, using visual, vibration and audio cues. ASSISTANT shows which vehicle to board, indicates the vehicle's arrival, and provides an alert when it is time to get off. The system also detects and corrects any errors the user makes on a journey, and can be customised according to the precise needs of each user.
The application is currently being trialled in three European cities - Helsinki, Vienna and San Sebastian. The ASSISTANT consortium is interested in identifying other cities or regions interested in funding a local deployment of the system to server the needs of their ageing transport users.
Implementation of ASSISTANT technology in new cities and regions
Deployment of system to 500+ users
Increase levels of independent living for 65+ age group
Budget would vary depending on characteristics of city or region
Local transport or health authorities sought as partners
